Nuns urge Citi to stop funding fossil fuel projects

Banking giant Citi is urged by a confederation of nuns to ditch fossil fuel projects, protect the rights of indigenous groups and 'rethink' some of its investment decisions.

The Sisters of St Joseph of Peace calls on Citi to 'minimise its role' in offering fresh credit to facilities that enable oil drilling in Alaska.

The Sisters order owns shares in the bank has reportedly filed a resolution ahead of Citi's AGM on 25 April, which reads that the bank has "provided more than $5bn to oil company Enbridge, enabling the widely opposed Enbridge Line 3 and Line 5 pipeline routes."

The pipelines carry oil from the US to Canada and are fiercely opposed by indigenous groups and environmentalists.

Citi has reportedly denied financing the Line 3 and 5 projects, calling the claims "simply untrue" and is therefore urging shareholders to reject the nuns' motion.

However, the religious order said in a statement that “Citigroup’s . . . statement makes claims about its financing activities related to Enbridge Line 3 and Line 5 pipeline projects in an attempt to minimise its role in enabling these projects.”

Citi has not yet responded to the group's latest statement.
