Oil and gas firms face strict new methane rules in EU

Investors in oil and gas firms that operate across the EU may soon be faced with increased costs and more disclosure requirements as the bloc is moving closer to strict new methane rules for the sector.

Last night, the European Parliament’s Industry and Environment committees adopted their position on the EU’s Methane regulation, intended to reduce methane gas emissions in the oil and gas space.

The EU-wide measure is widely seen as the first of its kind regulation to reduce methane emissions from the energy sector. However, coal mining and natural gas imports are excluded.

Discussing the vote with Net Zero Investor last night, Flavia Sollazzo, senior director, EU Energy Transition at the Environmental Defense Fund Europe, explained that "when the regulation enters into force as agreed by the European Parliament, the oil and gas industry will have to comply with more efficient obligations for measuring, reporting and verifying methane waste, and for detecting and repairing leaks."

Sollazzo pointed out that "the new regulation will also ban the harmful practice of non-emergency venting and flaring."
