Oil CEO named as president of COP 28

Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, has been named as president of COP28, to be hosted by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in its capital Abu Dhabi from 30 November to 12 December this year.

Al Jaber has also acted as the special climate envoy of the United Arab Emirates, and is chairman of Masdar, a government-run renewables firm he helped establish.

Shamma Al Mazrui, UAE minister of state for youth affairs, and Razan Al Mubarak, president of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, will join Al Jaber’s team as youth climate champion and UN climate change high-level champion, respectively.

The UAE was the first country in the Middle East to commit to net zero by 2050 in line with Paris Agreement goals.
