US government greenlights £6.6bn Willow oil and gas project in Alaska

US President Joe Biden has signed off on a controversial oil and gas drilling project in the state of Alaska, known as the Willow Project.

Conoco Philips, the company behind the £6.6 billion project, said after Biden's approval was confirmed that it will spark local investments and should create thousands of jobs in the region.

The project is the largest oil development in Alaska in decades and is expected to produce up to 180,000 barrels of oil a day once fully up and running.

It is not yet clear when drilling in Alaska's remote North Slope will begin but Biden has approved three drill sites for the project.

Remarkably, the approval came only a day after the Biden administration announced limits on oil and gas drilling in roughly 16 million acres of land in Alaska and the Arctic Ocean.

Project Willow was met with fierce resistance in recent weeks.

The US Bureau of Land Management had warned it will generate up to 278 million metric tonnes of CO2e over its 30-year lifetime - the equivalent of adding two million cars to US roads every year.

CO2e is a unit used to express the climate impact of all greenhouse gases together, as if they were all emitted as carbon dioxide.
