BHP, Tata Steel announce partnership to study low-emission steel manufacturing
BHP, the mining company, has partnered with India’s Tata Steel to study low carbon steel manufacturing technology. The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly examine and explore a range of technologies that could potentially reduce emissions intensity of integrated steel mills by 30%, according to the statement from BHP. In addition, the statement says, “the technologies explored in this partnership can potentially reduce emission intensity of integrated steel mills by up to 30 per cent. Importantly these projects demonstrate how abatements applied to the blast furnace iron-making process, which contributes to more than 60 per cent of India’s steel production, can materially reduce the carbon intensity of existing capacity”. Reducing the carbon footprint of its large steel industry while meeting future demand is expected to be a key challenge in India’s net-zero journey.
