Quinbrook backed clean energy transport hub enters construction

The UK’s first clean energy hub for logistics transport has entered construction. The project is being led by Aegis Energy, a company backed by Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners.

The hub, located in Sheffield, will provide clean refuelling and recharging services for vans and trucks. Its operational capacity is expected to serve over 100 logistics vehicles per day, yielding a potential avoided CO2-equivaent emissions of nearly 1.3MT by 2060.

“Decarbonising commercial transport starts with building the right infrastructure in the right places”, said Aegis Energy’s chief executive Michael Saw. “This hub will support cleaner air, local jobs and economic growth, while strengthening the links that keep goods moving around the UK”, he added.

For the UK, road transport is a vital component of its emissions reduction plans. The sector currently accounts for 31% of the country’s net greenhouse gas emissions. As emissions regulations for logistics transport tighten, fleet operators are increasingly relying on supporting infrastructure to catalyse their transition to low-emission vehicles.

“Freight, once a sector that was thought to be near-impossible to abate, is proving to be anything but; customers are demanding change, investment is flooding in, and new infrastructure is under way.”, commented Lord Deben, chair of the Council for Net Zero Transport.

“As our first hub moves into construction, we are taking an important step in building a national network that gives fleet operators the practical, reliable infrastructure they need to transition”, says Aegis CEO Saw.

In January 2025, Quinbrook announced an investment of up to £100m in Aegis Energy. This was Quinbrook’s inaugural allocation to sustainable transport as an investment theme.

Over the next four years, Aegis Energy plans on deploying clean energy hubs along every major motorway in the country. The flagship Sheffield facility is expected to open in spring next year.
